BOOKS BY C. A. ANDREWS:

.

In Seashell Guitar Stories, the author recalls luminous moments that suddenly seemed to transcend day-to-day reality. Although the protagonist here is called ("Jay"), he is in reality the author, Christopher Arthur Andrews. ("In childhood, we are naturally more receptive to mystical experience,") he says.

In some of the memories that inspired these stories, he experienced an uncanny foresight of events that would soon be confirmed: ("Suddenly, halfway down the street, Jay saw what looked like a television screen floating in the air, but it was his imagination. For a few moments he saw a clear picture. . . ")

In others, he simply felt a deep sense of awe and wonder, as at the sight of an elderly neighbor's display cases filled with arrowheads and other prehistoric Native American artifacts. ("The light seemed to float over the cases like a mist, as if a magic radiance was at play in the room.")

Another time, he felt awe, fascination and dread at the sight of a rattlesnake sinuously gliding into the family living room.

The ability to ("go past the veil of everyday perception") is not necessarily limited to childhood, Andrews says. ("As adults, through meditation and practice we can again cultivate and participate in the wonders of other realms.")

.

A storm passes over the sea and takes Nicolo the hermit crab to a distant shore. An octopus and a sea horse tell Nicolo of many things yet to happen. They remind him that the sea spirit has given all creatures a piece of light and to share and take care of the kingdom.

Sculpture: The Works of Oliver Andrews

Handbound Special Edition.

This long-awaited book is a comprehensive collection of the majority of Oliver Andrews' work, which has not been seen since his passing. It is my hope that sculptors and those who appreciate sculpture will find inspiration in his unique and poetically expressive work.

Every material has an active presence and every material is susceptible to change. The task of the sculptor is to understand the natural properties of a chosen material, to know in the process of creation how best to work with, or against, its characteristics. In this generously illustrated studio manual, sculptor Oliver Andrews takes a new approach to sculpture, focusing on how the innate assertiveness of materials affects the complex act of making a sculpture.

BIOGRAPHY

Oliver Andrews was born in Berkley, California in 1925, and attended Stanford University. He lived and worked in Santa Barbara until the late 1950s, at which time he moved to Santa Monica and began teaching sculpture at the UCLA art department.

He was married to actress Betty Harford, and by the early 1960s he had started a family and was living in Santa Monica Canyon. His students, friends and colleagues included many of the Los Angeles artists of that time; Richard Diebenkorn, Bill Brice, Lee Mullican, Dwain Valentine, Judy Chicago, Mark di Suvero, Sam Francis, Billy Al Bengston, Anthony Berlant, Adrian Saxe, David Hockney and many others not mentioned here.

In 1978 at the age of 53, Andrews died in a scuba diving accident off the California Channel Island of Anacapa. Due to unforeseen circumstances and the liquidating of his work upon death, much of his legacy has fallen into obscurity.

The new Channel Islands museum in Carpinteria will have the eight representative Islands in the outdoor garden. Anacapa Island will feature a sculpture and dedication to Andrews.
